What the heck is KIDCORE jewelry?

I always prefer unique over trendy, but sometimes trends focus on original and quirky, and I can definitely get behind those!

You've probably heard the term “core” in various phrases recently, like “cottage core” “fairy core” or “kidcore” usually in reference to décor or fashion styles. I’m going to expand on one of them today, because I personally find kidcore very fun and I have some pieces from my beaded jewelry collection that play to that aesthetic.

Actually, even the word “aesthetic” has become trendy! If you have a daughter in elementary school (like I do) and she has some Tik Tok or other social media privileges, you’ve definitely had that term come up in conversation! (My daughter has changed her bedroom “room aesthetic” several times over the past year.) Aesthetic just refers to the overall design style, visual quality or appeal of something.

Long before the internet videos and on-demand programming kids of the eighties and nineties had beads and crafts to help pass the time, keep our hands busy and stay entertained while school on a break and parents worked. If you were lucky, you got to spend time at summer camp or organized programs… where you also created jewelry and art with beads and other crafts! Remember friendship pins, knot bracelets and boondoggle?

Kidcore is a fun, funky style that is reminiscent of that time period and reminds us of going to sleep, showering and swimming with a armful of bracelets that didn’t match, we couldn’t necessary take off, nor did we ever want to!

Kidcore jewelry, is chunky, brightly coloured, often primary colour based, and visually loud… (Dare I say, some of the samples I came across in my research could be described as “ugly” but that’s not really fair as art is in the eye of the beholder.) When I design kidcore jewelry, I still seek a balance of colour tone within a beaded necklace wrap, a playful balance of bold colours, sizes and patterns…

Here are a few pieces that could be considered kidcore, they are fun and playful but in sizes appropriate for kids or women. I am also able to expand a one-of-a-kind piece you love to fit perfectly, or even create a custom piece just for you! I have plans to make more kidcore jewelry in the coming months, so check my store again soon!
